About Life Coaching

Life & Executive Coaching

What is Coaching?

  • The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as the following:

“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

  • Life and Executive Coaching:

Life coaching aims to assist individuals in identifying and achieving personal goals. Executive coaching assists individuals toward achieving specific professional goals.

What does Coaching have to Offer?

  • Insight and Discovery:

Coaching is the process of identifying your resources and strengths as well as to identify barriers (internal or external), gain insight on how to overcome obstacles and tap into strengths in order to maximize your successes on your journey of life.

  • Clarity and Focus:

Coaching also helps you discover that which you really want. It asks you to be more than you thought you could be on your own. It helps you gain clarity and focus to produce results more quickly. It also provides you with the tools, support and structure to be more of who you want to be and do what you want to do.

Coaching is NOT Counseling and psychotherapy.

  • Coaches do not work on psychological issues or issues of the past. Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction and intrapersonal and interpersonal conflict. Although coaching recognizes that past behavior and/or experiences may affect current behavior and circumstances, it is not the focus of the coaching process and relationship. Therapy tends to focus on resolving difficulties produced from past negative experiences that affect one’s current emotional functioning and how to cope in more emotionally healthy ways in the present. On the other hand, coaching focuses on positive action and change that supports personal and professional growth based on self-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. Coaching is future focused.

Although coaching is not therapy, it does assist individuals with gaining further self-awareness and identify thinking patterns that may be hindering movement and growth.

Coaching is NOT Consulting

  • Although coaching is mostly like consulting, coaches are not viewed as the sole expert, as is the consultant, in diagnosing the problem, prescribing and implementing strategies and solutions. The assumption here is that individuals are being taught by an “expert” in a specific area. With coaching, the assumption is that individuals are the experts and are capable of generating their own solutions, with the coach drawing on individual strengths and resource to maximize change while providing support and discovery-based approaches. Coaches also have closer partnerships with their clients to assist and hold them accountable with the implementation of identified changes leading to achievement of set goals.

The coach may provide additional resources in the form of relevant articles, checklists, and assessments to support individual’s thinking and actions.
